How to understand rising and falling river levels

What a trend describes, what can cause it, and what it cannot tell you about hazards.

“Rising” and “falling” describe the direction of a selected parameter over a stated period. The phrase is incomplete without the parameter, station, and timestamps. Gage height may fall while streamflow responds differently because the channel control or backwater has changed.

Rainfall, snowmelt, dam operations, tides, tributary timing, groundwater, and water withdrawals can all influence the line. A short increase does not automatically indicate a flood; a decrease does not remove hazards.

LakeRiverNow computes trend direction only from stored observations and records the calculation version, input window, input observations, and generated time. A tolerance prevents tiny sensor noise from being labeled as meaningful movement.

Official flood watches, warnings, and forecast points take visual priority. For recreation or navigation, combine the gauge with local rules, weather, releases, access conditions, and direct observation.
